How Tip Calculation Works

The tip amount is calculated by multiplying the bill (or pre-tax amount) by the tip percentage:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

Worked example

Dinner for 4 people: bill is $80.00. You want to leave 20% tip.

Tip = $80.00 × 0.20 = $16.00 · Total = $80.00 + $16.00 = $96.00 · Per person = $96.00 ÷ 4 = $24.00

Rounding modes explained

None: Tip and total displayed to the cent. Round tip up: Tip is rounded up to the nearest dollar (e.g. $16.40 → $17.00), making per-person splits cleaner. Round total up: The total is rounded up to the next whole dollar instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax amount, though tipping on the total (including tax) is also acceptable. The difference is small — on a $50 bill with 8% tax, the difference between tipping on pre-tax vs post-tax at 20% is about $0.80. Use the "Add tax" toggle in the calculator to experiment.
  • In the US, 15–20% is standard for table service. 15% for average service, 18–20% for good service, and 25%+ for exceptional service. In many other countries tipping is optional or not practiced at all — use the Country Preset to see local norms.
  • Set the number of people, then open "Custom (Uneven) Split." You can type the exact amount each person owes. The remaining balance indicator shows what's left to assign, turning green when the full bill is covered.
  • In Japan, tipping is generally not practiced and can sometimes be considered awkward. Excellent service is considered part of the standard. The customary tip percentage in Japan is 0%. Select "Japan" in the Country Preset to pre-fill this value.
  • It increases the tip to the next whole dollar so per-person amounts are clean, round numbers. For example, if the raw tip is $11.40, it rounds up to $12, making the total $72 — much easier to split evenly among 4 people ($18.00 each instead of $17.85).
